National Demonstrator: David Thomson His Title: 'Celebrations'
From Glasgow errand boy to Property Lawyer, and now an internationally acclaimed NAFAS Demonstrator, that’s quite a CV! And so we expected some interesting stories and our demonstrator David Thomson did not disappoint with his title “Celebrations” - very appropriate for our 40th Anniversary year. David’s signature style is to create monochromatic schemes using tints, tones, shades and textures of flowers in a single colour in each of his designs. He used this style to stunning effect in six colourways for different celebratory occasions – Mother’s Day, St Patrick’s Day, Diamond Jubilee, Copper Anniversary, 60th Birthday, and 40th Anniversary.
For Mother’s Day his design included lovely pink carnations and “Pink Heaven” roses.
Remembering St Patrick’s Day, we were wowed with green “Bells of Ireland” and green anthuriums.
For Diamond Jubilee David gave us blue delphiniums and white roses;
David's arrangement depicting a Copper Anniversary contained russet “Terra” anthuriums, peach gerberas and “Sleeping Beauty” roses.
Further celebrations included 60th Birthday - purple alliums, liatris, and dark magenta carnations, and finally, to mark our club’s 40th Anniversary his final arrangement included dark red roses, red carnations and mini red gerberas. Most of his designs had “companion” arrangements, all included in the raffle, so there were plenty of opportunities to win something to take home.
And in addition to the lovely flowers we heard many amusing and interesting stories and anecdotes of parties and celebrations in the presence of celebrities such as Elton John, Lord Hanson (not at the same time!), and at Frank Sinatra’s house. And tips on how to survive Buckingham Palace garden parties – wear comfy shoes and make sure you eat beforehand!
