Demonstrator - Fiona Franklin Her Title: 'Vintage Affair'
October started with a super sunny day and a fun floral evening for the members of Clophill and District Flower Club. The demonstrator for the evening was Fiona Franklin whose title was 'A Vintage Affair' which took the form of a story set in the 1950s about childhood sweethearts Frank and Jenny. We were fascinated to hear that Frank had been offered a post as an officer on the Titanic which he declined to be with Jenny and develop their plant nursery- that was a lucky decision!
Arrangements were selected to illustrate points within the story. Running the nursery was an Autumnal design in a terra cotta pot with sun flowers, mimosa and dark foliage such as 'Black Tie' leaves. A useful tip was that these large leaves can be shredded using the fingernail and the result is soft grass like material.
This was followed by a lovely green and white design using white roses, Calas and Protea buds. This was to show the 12 years of happy marriage then along came three children to complete the picture. Fiona used a small wicker pram filled with tropical foliage with flowers such as Anthurium 'Pistache' and Gingers to indicate the third child who was called Chicken.
They continued to live happily until Frank died of a brain tumour. This influenced Chicken who decided to train to be a nurse. The next design included a mirror with roses called 3D , Ameranthus and Crocosmia seed heads and this was to show Chicken getting ready to go out dancing followed by an arrangement in shades of lilac in a picnic basket as she developed the friendship with her boyfriend.
Finally Fiona built up a magnificent pink hat which Jenny wore to Chicken's wedding. She the revealed that Frank and Jenny were her Grandparents and Chicken her mother. It was a most enjoyable evening. Why don't you join us for our special Christmas meeting on 3rd December when our demonstrator will be Jane Fox with her title 'Christmas Winterland'? This should get us all in a festive mood.
Demonstrator - Julia Knights Her Title: 'Hello Broadway'
Our September meeting with National Demonstrator Julia Knight was a very enjoyable evening. With the title 'Hello Broadway' Julia took the audience there. Having just passed her demonstrator qualifications she shared some of her test arrangements with us.
We began with 'Chorus Line', a container lined with yellow and green foliages. Yellow Roses represented dancers of different stature, some standing, some sitting, Yellow Taxi and apples to indicate the Big Apple.
Her second arrangement had wood, shaped to resemble 'Crag Rock' from the Lion King. Palm foliage for jungle, Strelitzia (Bird of Paradise) to resemble leaping Gazelles and in the foreground Monstera leaves and pink Protea from South Africa. Branches of Pieris, bronzed leaves and Lotus seed heads completed the design. 'Singing in the Rain' followed with a Lamp Post, Phormium leaves to show water cascades, infilled with Pittosporum for raindrops, several green Antheriums, centrally placed Pink Hydrangea and several small heads placed in suspended glass splash droplets. Pale pink Carnations and umbrella completed the arrangements. Memories of Eric and Ernie! We were treated to 'Phantom of the Opera' with a candled foliage wreath, Fagus (Copper Beech),grouped dark Heuchera leaves and pale pink Champagne Roses, two masks added to the effect. The design was on a Pedestal with second wreath at the base.
A visit to 'My Fair Lady' followed showing Eliza Doolittle's hat. A large shape made of woven Birch twigs complemented with a trim of Ferns for feathers, Snowberry sprays, white Hydrangea Lilies, Sweetpeas and Avalanche roses. Delicate Asparagus fern and green and white Hosta leaves. A twig umbrella stood alongside.
Finally a trip to 'Carmen' set in Seville. A Bridge of glass tubes each containing different coloured Gerbera to imitate the Gypsy girls. Carmen herself, a large dark Rose. The 'Guardia' stood in command position . Julia told the story using plants for people. ie. Ivy and Myrtle which had the audience laughing more so when the only male member was named as the Matador. During a fight, Carmen was stabbed and Love-Lies- Bleeding flowed down.
