Demonstrator: Theresa Rodrigues Her Title: What a Load of Rubbish!
We were delighted to welcome back Theresa Rodrigues for our October meeting with her demonstration entitled ‘What a Load of Rubbish’! She is a lady with an impressive CV where flower arranging is concerned. This year she gained her third Gold Medal at Chelsea and ‘Best in Show’. We had high expectations for the evening and we were not disappointed.
During the evening Theresa’s enthusiasm and design skills were very apparent, not only in her flower arranging but also in the creation of her containers and accessories. One such container was made using the technique of origami and after a lot of time spent trialling different qualities of old paper she said that the John Lewis Catalogue was best!
As Theresa worked she explained the inspirations for her designs. Her third design was inspired from her childhood memories of accompanying her father when he visited the family owned rubber plantation. Here she would watch as the rubber ran free from the tree into a bowl. Going up in a cable car over a jungle left her with memories of large green tropical and structural foliage, these she incorporated into her fifth design.
The six arrangements were very individual with excellent and varied choice of flowers and foliage, including Calla Lilies, Orchids, Strelitzias and Protea Pin Cushion. Theresa demonstrated how to cut and manipulate foliage to create different shapes. Each arrangement was accompanied by amusing and entertaining stories. The evening proved to be one of the highlights of the year.
