Demonstrator:  Rehka Naidoo
Her Title:  A Floral Fairground

A full hall welcomed back Rehka Naidoo to our Club.  This time her demonstration was entitled ‘A Floral Fairground’.  There was much nostalgia about our youth spent in a fairground meeting up with friends.
Her first design was a Rollercoaster depicted with a lazy S-shape of green foliage and medillino sticks.  From this base Rehka added variegated foliage, yellow gerbera and pink roses.  In order to give it some sparkle, she included fluorescent beads and sisal curls.  When she produced a boat-shaped piece of wood this was to be the Coconut Shy. Three pink Protea were inserted along with pink cymbidium orchids, curls of cordyline, phormium seed pods and ornamental grasses.  Finally, bright pink sisal spheres were added.
Next came the Waltzer created in a large shallow dish, with six separate arrangements of the Anastasia green chrysanthemum and deep red Grand Prix roses with the addition of gold leaf and lavender along with circles made from straw and grapevine stems.  After our coffee break, an Ice-cream Cone was created with a brown cone-shaped base and the ice-cream depicted by white bloom carnations.  It looked good enough to eat!
The Helter-skelter mechanics were immediately identified by the audience.  The curly base had been decorated with material covered beads and to this Rehka added palm leaves, sculptured fatsia leaves, pale purple anthuriums and liatrus along with orange celosia placed in deep into the arrangement.  Lastly green spray chrysanthemums were added.

Her final design was the Merry-Go-Round.  The outline of a horse which had been decorated with ribbon stood at the base of the stand.  Above that Rehka arranged mixed foliage, then added an abundance of flowers including red and pink roses, spray chrysanthemums some green and others which had been dyed dark blue, anthuriums and deep pink bloom carnations.  To add a final sparkle there were wired beads and satin ribbons.

During the evening, we were entertained not only by Rehka’s skill interpreting the sideshows at a fair but she also gave us an insight into the courtship and arranged marriages she and her four sisters had to accept growing up in a traditional Indian family.

Another very enjoyable evening at the Club.  For further details of our Club and programme, please check this website or our
