7th December 2017
National Demonstrator: Lorena Dyer
Her Title: 'A Christmas Wish'

The year ended with a fantastic evening at the Club with a Christmas demonstration by Lorena Dyer from Coventry. She filled the stage with 14 large designs using many different types of flowers including amaryllis, roses, orchids and carnations. The audience were spellbound and Lorena entertained us with her stories and warm humour.

The evening was a ‘sell-out’ with a maximum audience of 120 people. The Committee served mulled wine and homemade mince pies and everyone went home full of the Christmas spirit and inspired to decorate their homes in’ Lorena’s style’.

In January we held our AGM where we reviewed 2017 and planned activities for 2018.  The Chairman, Carolyn Cranswick, reported that the Club had a very successful year as our membership had stayed at about 80 with many visitors coming to meetings during the year. We had many popular demonstrations and our flower arranging classes have been well attended. We have held workshops with Pre-school children and groups of young ‘mums’ making Christmas wreaths.

During the year we have arranged flowers for 8 weddings that have showcased our talents and contributed to our funds and charity fund.  It was agreed at the AGM that the Club would donate £1,000 to the Primrose Unit at Bedford Hospital to go towards their transport scheme, taking patients to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for treatment. Some of this money was raised at the Village Fete and our monthly charity stall.

2017 ended on rather a sad note as we heard that Doris Pitts, our Honorary Member, had died at the age of 101. Doris was a founder member and regularly attended the Club, even after she moved to Meppershall Care Home in her last years. Doris was a favourite with members and always sat on the front row and was eager to win an arrangement in the raffle. In fact many members donated their prize to Doris as she would be so disappointed if she went home without some flowers. She will be missed but fondly remembered.

Clophill and District Flower Club have a full programme of demonstrations and everyone is welcome at their meetings or classes.   Please check this website also our Facebook page for details.
